All about Hampshire
Hampshire has played a central part in the history of England, the county town of Winchester was at one time England's capital city. A significant part of the population live in the urbanized south of the county particularly around Southampton and Portsmouth. The channel lies to the south and has been central to the economic well being of the area. Today nearly half the county is made up up the New Forest and the South Downs. Hampshire enjoys close connections with the armed forces and strong ties to the maritime industry.
A varied county
Very rural to the north, large coastal conurbations to the south, Hampshire is a county of contrasts. It enjoys some beautiful coastline and areas of outstanding natural beauty. The administration of the county on a district level is broken down to the authorities of: Basingstoke and Deane, City of Winchester, East Hampshire, Eastleigh, Fareham, Gosport, Hart, Havant, New Forest City of Portsmouth, Rushmoor, City of Southampton and the Test Valley. In Hart the county has one of the districts regarded as the best places to live in the UK.
